Acculturation is the process of adopting cultural traits or social patterns of another group, especially a dominant one. Also, the process by which a particular society is instilled in a human from infancy onward.
As a conquered peoples we had to be Acculturated into European society. With no control over what level of society we would be integrated into we were placed at the lowest caste. To accept and enforce our status of inferiority in this society we have to be made to feel comfortable with the identity of inferior through "education" and training to develop our mind's and manners to fit out place as the inferior in this society. Through the acceptance of inferiority we were allowed to be almost treated as accepted members of society, when really we are TOLERATED members of society.
When we are born we have no notion of Superior and Inferior. Through the education system and our culture and society we later make these distinctions. The main tool used in establishing this hierarchy between ethnicities, specifically blacks compared to everyone else in the U.S., is the over exaggeration of slavery in African history or the implication that slavery begins African history.
It has a psychological affect on blacks, whites, and all races in fact. It gives all other ethnicities the impression that because they can find an ancient high civilization attributed to their racial group and cant find one ,in the text books provided by Europeans, attributed to Africans that we are unachieved, inferior, primitive, and contributed nothing to classical civilization and world scholarship. The European education doesn't directly state that we are the inferior people but it 100% directly IMPLIES that we are inferior and contributed nothing to civilization until we were Christianized, Islamized, Europeanized and most importantly DE-AFRICANIZED. It's not like our ancient Kushite (Ethiopia, Sudan, Nubia) history isn't in the text books. Some text books do mention the African Kingdom of Kush as developing at the same time as Egypt (also an ARICAN!! Kingdom) and even being as great as Egypt, but the curriculum just zig zags right passed that chapter and students of African decent never get that piece of themselves as a starting point of identity and cultural reference.
I haven't experienced the next topic I am about to touch on but discussing blackness with close friends and family, and also by hearing it when others discuss this, I realized that the over exaggeration of slavery as our history and identity caused a great shame and slight resentment in the hearts of Africans. This self-hate is felt in every shade ranging from the "Blue-Black" darkest person to the lightest "I have to tell people I'm black" person. It leaves Africans in a sense of disassociation and those who have to tell people they have black in their blood for you to know it, simply choose not to tell. Eventually the distinction is made between those who are clearly African and those who have lost two of the stereotypical features of Africans, Kinky hair and "Black" skin. This is how countries comprised of predominantly mixed people, due to African in their recent ancestry and ancient ancestry, can and will deny the reality that they are a half-black people and nation. Every "Brown" nation or "Brown" peoples are in fact Africans mixed with various Asiatic and Caucasian peoples.
As for this nation, which is clearly ran by the European (Caucasoid) Colonial structure, the affect is double. Not only is there a social structure in place that implies the inferiority of blacks and emphasizes white achievement, there is a pseudo-culture and social structure on the underbelly of mainstream society that teaches and enforces European (white) supremacy and Black inferiority. Now these people who enforce European supremacy and out right hatred for Backs, control what information gets to these very same blacks whom they despise with a murderous passion. Is it far fetched that maybe the information may be slightly compromised due to the bias of the one distributing the information? This bias was created and perpetuated through general mis-education and fabricated images, such as painting and statuary, to generate a false impression and context of history and ethnicity.
Strategic manipulation of the dispensing of information by the European Imperialists (Rich White Supremacists) who control it, has created a culture of Euro-centrism. This Euro-centrism of mainstream society has produced propaganda and images of Blacks that were meant to stereotype and de-humanize us. Remember back in these times we hadn't started worshipping the Italian Mafia yet. Every ethnicity has a Mafioso element to it and because we as African Americans have adopted that culture in modern times, that is now superimposed on our entire historical identity and is used to validate the historical brutality imposed on us. But it is not before the arrest of Al Capone that black people adopted the Mafioso culture as our own, resulting in what you see today. So we were not sellin drugs, rappin, saggin our pants, or any type of criminal, which are all the MODERN excuses for the brutality and discrimination inflicted on blacks. What was the excuse back then??? The MYTH of inferiority was spread through propaganda and general slander.
So our acculturation into this society of Euro-Centrism has resulted in us adopting the criminal element of it's under-belly. Our imitating the Italian Mafia has now justified the myths that have been created about us and the enslavement of our people. The argument collapses on itself once you look at the culture of black people decade by decade. Before the 60's the argument that our criminality today represents what slavery saved us from or civilized us from, becomes historically incorrect and extremely insulting. So now we are faced with a situation where the Mafia culture that we have been practicing for only 40 years, is being used as an excuse to validate 400 years of Chattel Slavery. If our Mafioso criminality is the worst part about us, the sub-human part of us, then why ignore the fact that Mafioso criminality culture is foreign to us. Why ignore the fact that the worst part about us, is our acculturation into European practices? How can we ignore that. By not realizing it.
We act like gangstas because they was gangsta, we hate us because they hate us, we think we are inferior because they think we are inferior, we don't read because we know THEY don't want us to, we don't try to rise up because we know THEY don't want us to, we think we are slaves because THEY think we are slaves. "Reading is for white people", have you ever heard our people say anything like that, "Oh you smart like a white person." We have accepted everything we were told on the plantation. if you know we weren't allowed to learn or read during slavery why wouldn't you want to learn and read as much as you can once your free?? Because you still believe you are the slave and reading and learning is for "mass'a". You sound just like Chicken George when you say that dumb shit. "Learning is for white people." "Being smart is for white people", Don't that sound like something a Slave Master would say? Doesn't that sound like something every KKK member would say? Doesn't that sound like something the most obedient slave would say? It is because of acculturation that the average Black African in America thinks and sais the same things as a Slave Master, a KKK member, and an obedient slave. "Get rich and leave the hood"? If you have money stay away from black people right? Isn't that how the hood stays the hood?
Due to acculturation we are being White-Supremacists when we don't even know it. "reading is for white people", "you smart like a white person" all that implies is the superiority of Europeans. More importantly it represents what limits you already put on yourself, what inferiority you have accepted for yourself. We have accepted inferiority as our identity and Euro-centrism as our culture and White Supremacy as our reality. This and this alone is why we are in the position we are in today. When we are explaining how our successful communities were systematically burned down and the people were killed, or explaining how laws were implemented to restrict our political and economic growth that still cripples us to this day, or explaining how the non-violent approach in the civil rights era tricked us into putting ourselves mentally in the state of a pledge trying to enter a College Phrat doing anything and taking any degrading brutality it takes to be accepted into this society as if its something worth the brutality forcing you to sub consciously put the society on a pedestal, we are trying to describe all of the processes that acculturated us into accepting White Supremacy as our reality and culture.
The way we even think about slavery adds supremacy to Europeans. We think they came to the Africans home land and chased them down through the dense jungle out smarted and out muscled the savage African netting and roping him with the greatest of ease, enough so to export millions per year. NOT TRUE. Unfortunately Africans sold other Africans into slavery and Arabs, who were enslaving us before Europeans, also sold Africans to Europeans. Between the populations being decimated by Arabs exporting people, Europeans exporting people, and European diseases killing off the numbers they've always killed off, the populations dealing with the Europeans became so low in numbers that militaristic conquest was possible and often times failed resulting in other Africans being hired to defeat other Africans on behalf of Europeans.
Another false assumption made regarding this subject and this time period, is that it was the first time Africans and Europeans had significant contact with each other. This is why our history according to the Europeans begins here. White Supremacy and Euro-centrism do not exist if African history does not start with our enslavement. First of all, who were Africans that Europeans had to wait until masses were sold off and then masses die from disease for them to THEN militaristically conquer often times failing and then sometimes enlisting other Africans to get the job done?
Right before the boom of the trans Atlantic slave trade, the time period I just referenced in the previous paragraph, there was another "boom" that lasted for 800 years spanning from 711c.e., under the lead of Tariq ibn-Ziyad to 1490c.e. It was the reign of the Afro-Asiatic Empire ruling North Africa, Spain, Portugal, Sicily, Malta, and parts of south France. They are contemporarily known as the Moors. Basil Davidson, one of the most noted historians recognized and declared that there were no lands at that time (the eighth century) "more admired by its neighbours, or more comfortable to live in, than a rich African civilization which took shape in Spain".The Moors, who ruled Spain for 800 years, introduced new scientific techniques to Europe, such as an astrolabe, a device for measuring the position of the stars and planets. Scientific progress in Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography and Philosophy flourished in Moorish Spain. At its height, Córdova, the heart of Moorish territory in Spain, was the most modern city in Europe!! The streets were well-paved, with raised sidewalks for pedestrians. During the night, ten miles of streets were well illuminated by lamps. (This was hundreds of years before there was a paved street in Paris or a street lamp in London.) Cordova had 900 public baths.
Moors introduced paper to Europe and Arabic numerals, which replaced the clumsy Roman system.Education was universal in Moorish Spain, available to all, while in Christian Europe ninety-nine percent of the population were illiterate, and even kings could neither read nor write. At that time, Europe had only two universities, the Moors had seventeen great universities! These were located in Almeria, Cordova, Granada, Juen, Malaga, Seville, and Toledo. In the tenth and eleventh centuries, public libraries in Europe were non-existent, while Moorish Spain could boast of more than seventy, of which the one in Cordova housed six hundred thousand manuscripts. The Moorish rulers lived in sumptuous palaces, while the monarchs of Germany, France, and England dwelt in big barns, with no windows and no chimneys, and with only a hole in the roof for the exit of smoke. One such Moorish palace ‘Alhambra' (literally "the red one") in Granada is one of Spain's architectural masterpieces. Alhambra was the seat of Muslim rulers from the 13th century to the end of the 15th century. The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moors brought the Compass from China into Europe. The Moors introduced many new crops including the orange, lemon, peach, apricot, fig, sugar cane, dates, ginger and pomegranate as well as saffron, sugar cane, cotton, silk and rice which remain some of Spain's main products today. The Moors ruled and occupied Lisbon (named "Lashbuna" by the Moors) and the rest of the country until well into the twelfth century. They were finally defeated and driven out by the forces of King Alfonso Henriques. The scene of this battle was the Castelo de Sao Jorge or the 'Castle of St. George.'
And after that victory Europe entered the home continent of there former Dark Skinned Masters and Teachers enslaving, infecting with disease, raping, murdering, and colonizing their FORMER TEACHERS AND MASTERS!! The movie "Othello" starring Laurence Fishburn, based on Shakespeare's play "Othello" about a Moorish noble ruling Spanish subjects, attests to the black identity of the Moors by casting an African American. In the more edgy, hip remake called "O" starring an even darker African American Mekhi Phifer, the Afro identity of the Moors is still represented. Yet in a Nat Geo documentary I saw about the moors not one painting of them done in their time was included. The reason for this is because it would have shown Africans in history before the trans Atlantic slave trade, but the most important fact that was meant to hide is that it would have shown Africans RULING HIGH CIVILIZATION. Not only ruling it but introducing it to backwards LESS CIVILIZED EUROPE!! BOOM, DOWN COMES WHITE SUPREMACYYYYY!!
So in conclusion................lol, the process of replacing our African identity, culture, society, and views with a new identity, culture, society, and views is called acculturation. Through this acculturation we have become Euro-centric and White supremacists who have gone through a mass hazing during the Integration and Civil Rights era. This hazing implied that being integrated into white society was worth being spat on, beaten, lynched, jailed, marching and begging. We didn't beg for integration or want it, we were forced into integration because all of our successful black communities were systematically DESTROYED by their white neighbors culminating in the record number of attacks of 1919 famously called "The Red Summer". Once they destroyed our independent black communities such as Tulsa Oklahoma, we were integrated into the lowest strata of THEIR society with no say in what position we were integrated into. After that integration we are force fed, by means of strategic manipulation of information, a false identity of inferiority. The over exaggeration of slave as are historical relevance is to enforce the position that our oppressors desire us to remain in and embrace in HIS society. The lie that we were ignorant slaves combined with the mentality we took on during our integration led us to accept inferiority and Mafioso as our identity.
